Two Years Worth of Climate Discussion Open in Glasgow
The Glasgow Climate Change Conference opened for its two-week gathering starting from 31 October to 12 November 2021, including statements from grouping of parties and stakeholders and the start of substantive work within five bodies and joint by the world leaders to present their pledges at COP26. In the conference, the President of COP26, Alok Sharma of the UK, said this meeting is the “last best hope” for the goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degree Celsius. He said it is crucial to ensure that what Paris promised, Glasgow delivers.
UNFCCC Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa cited: increasing ambition, especially by members of the Group of 20 (G20), achieving finance targets and strengthening adaptation action. UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Abdulla Shahid also called for enhanced efforts to meet the USD 100 billion finance goal for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
