Strategic partnership for cooperation between France and Greece
France and Greece signed a multibillion-euro deal on September 28, 2021 for Athens to buy three French warships. President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the deal as a huge step forward for the EU’s defense ambitions, highlighting the partnership’s coherence, which is not targeted at any specific country.
However, it enables effective and collective effort for peace, collaboration, and stability. In this regard, the purchase of three warship is to deepen “strategic partnership” between the two countries and further defend their shared interests in the Mediterranean.
It is important to note that the contract to purchase the warship between France and Greece came less than two weeks after Australia cancelled 12 French submarine contracts and turned to US nuclear-powered submarines.
