White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee Yang Jiechi met in Switzerland as part of a negotiated settlement effort on October 6, 2021.
According to Emily Horne, a National Security Council spokeswoman said in confirming an earlier report by the South China Morning Post, Sullivan and Yang met to discuss efforts by the two sides to “responsibly manage the competition between the United States and the People’s Republic of China.”
She added that the meeting was a follow-up to a telephone conversation between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 9, 2021.
