France recalls Envoys to Washington and Canberra over Submarine deal
On the night of the 17th to the 18th of September, the French government recalled its envoys to Washington and Canberra.
The announcement signaled a diplomatic crisis between France’s government and the United States and Australia governments. This rare decision was made after Australia announced to terminate its contract to buy 12 French submarines, which have been in place since 2016.
The reason behind this cancellation of the multi-billion-dollar submarine contract is that Australia has turned to negotiations and the purchase of U.S. submarines powered by the nuclear system.
This move has angered the French government under President Emmanuel Macron’s administration and expressed the deep resentment towards the United States and Australia.
The controversy over the termination of the submarine contract has sparked a diplomatic crisis between the three countries and also the United Kingdom, undermining its alliance and security relations.
